When going on an outside adventure such as a hike or just a casual stroll, it is important to dress appropriately to keep warm and be comfortable. If you are dressed inappropriately, you may be uncomfortable and therefore not enjoy yourself as much as you otherwise would.

Here are some simple tips to make sure your excursion is an enjoyable one:

Underwear – the smallest item of outdoor clothing is a good place to start. If you are going be out in wet conditions, cotton is not the best choice as it soaks up moisture and could easily stay wet and uncomfortable. Instead go for polyprothene or polyester if possible.

Mid-layer – If you are doing active sports then a polyester fabric such as a fleece top is ideal over your undergarments. This helps trap your body heat to keep warm and wicks away moisture.

Rainwear – If weather is likely to be severe then use a rain and wind –resistant anorak in combination with water resistant underwear. If rain isn’t forecast, an emergency supply of these could be good just in case.

Outer-wear – Again this is dependant on the weather conditions, but ensure that you have enough layers of jumpers, fleeces and undergarments available. They can always be taken off if it is warm, but they will be needed if it is rainy, windy or cold!

Hat – Up to 80% of body heat is lost through your head and neck. A comfortable hat can help reduce this amount and keep you warmer. Hats also act as a good shield from the sun if hiking or out and about in warm climates.

Socks – One of the most important pieces of clothing. The right socks give comfort when walking and can prevent blisters. If your shoes do not fit perfectly, consider thick socks or two pairs of thinner socks to prevent your foot rubbing against your shoe. Make sure to take some spare pairs with you!
