In ancient times, the island of Lefkada was united with the mainland, but in 640 BC the Corinthians, who colonized the island, dug a canal to separate the island from continental Greece. Today a drawbridge permits access to the island by car.
The island is mountainous in its middle and flat near the sea. It is a place with rich greenery and, especially in its eastern side, it has large beaches and nice fishing villages. In the gulf of Lefkada, small uninhabited islands reflect their dark green forests in the blue clean waters. Also the position of the island, near Kefallonia and Ithaki, offer the possibility of excursions to these wonderful places.
Lefkada was inhabited from Prehistoric times and in the 7th Century was colonized by the Corinthians. It took part with some ships in the Persian War and later passed under the influence of Sparta. The island was conquered by Macedonia and Rome. In the Middle Ages, the island was victim of pirate raids. From the 13th Century it passed into the hands of Venice, Turkey, France and England until 1864, when it became part of Greece. Lefkada received the influence of these European peoples and this still today is evident in its architecture.
